Laura Berk, Ph.D., is a Distinguished professor of psychology at Illinois State University. She studies the effects of school environments on children’s development, the development of private speech, and most recently the role of make-believe play in development. Dr. Berk is the author of several widely distributed textbooks in human development, including Child Development, now in its 8th edition, and Infants, Children, and Adolescents, currently in its 6th edition. Her book for parents and teachers is Awakening Children’s Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference, which provides developmental psychology-based suggestions on how families and educators can foster the unique potential in children.
