Kindergarten Gets Longer in Virginia
Kindergartners in Fairfax County, Va., no longer get to go home and nap halfway through the day. This fall, Fairfax joins Maryland and Washington, D.C., in lengthening kindergarten to a full-day event. While the more-than-twice-as-long day might be daunting for some five-year-olds, research shows that longer kindergarten days enhance early literacy development, especially for low-income families and children for whom English is a second language. Having a full day to teach the same material also allows children more time for exploration, play and questioning that may help them better understand what they learn.
